PARTS OF A ROCKET

A rocket is a long vehicle, which is used to carry things and/or people into space. Continue reading this article to learn about the parts of a rocket. The primary parts of a rocket are mentioned in this blog.

PARTS OF A ROCKET

The main parts of a rocket are mentioned as follows

 PSLV - ISRO
PSLV - ISRO

STRUCTURAL SYSTEM

The structural system of a rocket is like the frame of a rocket. The structural system of a rocket consists of all the other systems of the rocket, which are the payload system, guidance system, and propulsion system.

The frame of a rocket is made up of very strong and lightweight materials, like Aluminium. In the structural system, the frame has long stringers, which run from top to bottom. These stringers are connected to circular frames, or hoops, which are put around the circumference of the vehicle.

The skin of the rocket is connected to the stringers and hoops, which is the basic formation of the rocket. The skin is coated with various materials to provide thermal protection to the rocket. This protection system protects the vehicle from external heat produced from the air friction, while the vehicle is in flight, and also for protecting the cold cryogenic fuels and oxidizers. Fins are kept in a few rockets at their bottom part to provide stability in flight.

PROPULSION SYSTEM

The propulsion system of a rocket gives the thrust that is required to launch the vehicle from the Launchpad, move through the atmosphere of the Earth, and enter outer space. This system constitutes a large part of the total mass and internal space of a rocket. The propulsion system consists of the rocket engine, fuel, oxidizers, pumps, combustion chamber with nozzle, tanks, etc.

A technique called rocket staging is used in modern-day rockets, to separate the sections of the propulsion system, which have used up all of their fuel, and are no longer required. This is done to decrease the weight of the vehicle, and for increasing aerodynamics while launching.

There are two types of rocket engines. They are liquid rocket engines and solid rocket engines. The type of rocket engine to be used depends on the requirements of the mission.

GUIDANCE SYSTEM

The function of the guidance system of a rocket is to guide the movement of the rocket and find the direction it will travel in. The rocket is kept upright during and after launch, with the help of its guidance system. This system controls the trajectory of the rocket in the atmosphere and controls its movement in space.

The guidance system consists of many sensors, onboard computers, radars, and other types of machinery that help the rocket navigate through the atmosphere. This can be done by enabling the system to detect the orientation of the rocket and its direction and make the required adjustments for maintaining the vehicle on its pre-determined track.

The guidance system is very important as it is used to control the rockets which are in flight.

PAYLOAD SYSTEM

The rocket payload means any form of cargo, object, or individual that is required to be sent or transported to space. Payload is the main reason why any rocket is sent into orbit or anywhere in outer space. The type of payload carried by a rocket varies as per the mission of the launch. Rockets are used to carry satellites, scientific instruments, and space probes into space.

CONCLUSION

The parts of a rocket or the various systems of a rocket have been mentioned in this blog. All of these systems play an important role in the launch and in controlling the movement of a rocket. The functions of every part and every system in a rocket make the mission successful for the launch of a vehicle in space. Read this blog to learn the basics about a rocket.
